Scholarships

The NLF Education Foundation was founded in 1993, with the “primary purpose of the Corporation” as “assistance, development, and maintenance of charitable, educational, or scientific programs or activities for the public schools of” a list of specified districts in Northeast Tarrant County.

Later, as the state of Texas made STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) more of a focus, the NLF EF board members decided to craft a process to award scholarships to students from 22 area high schools. An application is distributed after winter break to seniors attending Birdville ISD, Carroll ISD, Grapevine-Colleyville ISD, HEB ISD, Keller ISD, and Northwest ISD. Applications are scored and ranked based on various factors, including:

• Academic Performance
• Financial Need
• Extracurricular Involvement
• Community Service

Winners are notified and informed of the process to access their scholarship funding. Over the past few years, exciting changes have enhanced the process. The Nancy and Alan Hamm Foundation has generously matched the funding for scholarships provided to the Education Foundation by the Northeast Leadership Forum. In addition, Coca-Cola has provided a laptop for each scholarship winner, making their award even more meaningful.

Recently the NLF Education Foundation has added scholarships for students planning to attend trade schools in addition to those headed to traditional two year or four-year institutions. This development was initiated by former NLF Chair Howard Shotwell, who did the fundraising for the original group of students who received these awards.
